One morning, I came across a disturbing comment on one of my TikTok videos: “When are you going to do something about those nose hairs?” asked an internet troll. First, I clutched my pearls. Then, after an inspection in the mirror, I realized the troll wasn’t wrong. I had visible nose hair. And instead of adding “nose hair” to my list of social-media-induced insecurities, I decided to just nip this one in the bud.

After a quick search on nose-hair removal, I found a few options. The most conventional route was the nose-hair trimmer, but that seemed like too much regular maintenance. I also considered professional waxing. But would it hurt? And how much did getting waxed every few weeks cost? I gazed up my nostrils as those questions bounced around in my head.

Eventually, I decided on waxing because it seemed like the most dramatic option — very on-brand for me. I found some salons in the Los Angeles area that offered nose waxing for an average of $25 per session. But I’m a DIY kind of guy, so I also priced out what it would cost to do it myself with an at-home kit. My Amazon “nose-hair waxing” search returned the $10 Charmonic Nose Hair Waxing Kit for Men and Women. I love bargains, so I was pretty stoked when I found an option for less than half the cost of the in-salon wax. Then I realized I would get not one, not two, but ten uses from this single kit. Just one question remained: Do I have what it takes to yank out my own nose hair?

Within 24 hours of my order, the package was on my doorstep. I opened the box and grabbed the directions, which had step-by-step pictures. As someone with dyslexia, this was very well appreciated. Charmonic — whoever they are — couldn’t have made it simpler for me. Everything was provided in the box; all I had to do was heat up the wax in the microwave and dip the provided Q-Tip-like waxing sticks into it. From unboxing to ready-to-go wax, the process took less than five minutes.

Being the content creator I am, I decided to film my experience. The wax did feel a little hot once I stuck it up my nostrils, but it wasn’t too painful. I waited about 30 seconds or so for the wax to dry. Then, showtime. I honestly got a too impatient and pulled the wax stick before it was fully dry. It probably needed another 30 seconds, so half of the wax remained in my nostril. I picked it all out with my finger, which wasn’t the end of the world, despite how I made it seem in my TikTok. The video ended up being one of my more viral videos. (I don’t know if that’s something to be proud of, to be honest.)

Since then, I’ve learned that it’s best to press the side of your nose to feel if the wax has hardened. Noted for next time. Another learning: Do not wax both nostrils at once. My initial logic was if I did just one nostril, and it was too painful, I wouldn’t want to do the other. But if I put the wax in both at once, I’d have no choice but to finish the job. Reasonable. But if you insert wax into both nostrils at once, you’re not as focused on doing the job right. There is a little technique to nose waxing: You have to twist the wand slightly to gather up all the hair before you pull. The hardest part is getting past the mental block of that yank. Honestly, it was a little bit of pain, but beauty — and in my case, silenced trolls — made waxing worth it.
